Description
Pink flower blossom of a Jing Orange Okra plant with red veined green leaves and red and pink stems.
Each tall plant has one beautiful flower, which blooms briefly, while the plant continues to produce a profusion of red vegetables from summer through fall.
Okra is ubiquitous in southern cooking and I made some wonderful gumbo from the plants I grew. Although it is thought of as a southern plant, it grows well throughout much of the USA, as far north as southern New England. I grew this lovely plant and many like it in my New York kitchen garden in the Hudson Valley.
Okra must be used as soon as it is picked, or be frozen immediately. It freezes well to be enjoyed for many months.
