Description
The Departure Bell, circa 1918, rung as the missionaries depart for overseas, Maryknoll Mission Center, Ossining, New York, USA.
The Maryknoll Mission Center and Seminary sits on 93 acres in Ossining New York. The Asian inspired Mission Center and Seminary, designed by the Boston architectural firm of Maginnis and Walsh, was erected between 1920 and 1956 using stone from the property laid by local Italian stone masons. It is one of the largest fieldstone buildings in the United States. The Asian motifs reflect Maryknoll's mission in China. The property was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and became known as Mary's knoll and later Maryknoll. The Roman Catholic Maryknoll Society was founded in 1911 by two American priests, Father James Anthony Walsh and Father Thomas Frederick Price.
Maryknoll encompasses three societies, The Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers also known as the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America or the Maryknoll Society, the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic, founded by Molly Rogers (Sister Mary Joseph Rogers) and the Maryknoll Lay Missioners. They train and send out priests, brothers, nuns, and lay missionaries to Africa, Asia and Latin America. Working with local churches in 26 countries, their ministries include clinics and hospitals, an AIDS ministry and other health and education programs, agricultural, vocational training and community development programs, and caring for refugee communities uprooted by war and famine.
