I only spent a day on Nantucket, a cold and slightly overcast day in November, but I managed to get some of my very favorite photographs during that trip, many of which, like this one, have been among my best sellers. And I am not surprised. The island, which can only be approached by air or sea, is an amazing the coast of Cape Cod, my favorite place to photograph.

I spent the day with two friends, one of whom is lucky enough to live there. She took us all over and gave us the insider's tour. Neither of my friends are photographers, and the friend I was traveling with had never been to Nantucket either, so I did my best not to hold them up as I shot images of this gorgeous island off Cape Cod. I have wanted to get back there ever since.

We visited two lighthouses, my favorite photography subject, while we were there. This is Sankaty Head Lighthouse. I have rendered it in black and white so you can appreciate the texture of the old brick walls, the amazing clouds, which threatened but did not rain, and the view of the moors (you can see their fall colors in other images in my Lighthouse and Massachusetts Collections here).

The lighthouse has a very interesting history:
The 70 foot tall brick light house was built in 1850. It was the first lighthouse in Massachusetts with a Fresnel lens, replaced in 1950 with a rotating aerobeacon. The light was automated in 1965 but Coast Guard personnel occupied the station until 1992. In 2007, the Sankaty Head Lighthouse was moved from the edge of an eroding bluff to its current location, 250 feet from the edge of the bluff, so it would not be lost to the sea. A huge endeavor to save this beautiful piece historic building. Sankaty, from the Native American "Sankoty," means "highland." The view from the highland is amazing.
