Description
Female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Papilio glaucus, pollinating a pink zinnia elegans in my backyard garden.
I planted an ambitious garden from seed this year. I included a butterfly garden and was thrilled when this tiger swallowtail butterfly, with its beautiful yellow and iridescent blue coloring, landed on one of my zinnias. The zinnias have been more prolific than the many perennials I carefully nurtured from seed beginning indoors in the late winter / early spring, and have been a draw for butterflies and dragonflies.
I have seen many different types of swallowtail butterfly here in New York, but usually it seems that their tails are ragged by the time I find them. They generally live for a week or two. This one must have been young as its tails and the rest of its beautiful wings were perfect.
