Description
Viceroy butterfly, Limenitis archippus, found in nature in a wet meadow near a pond in Dutchess County in upstate New York, resting on a milkweed leaf, Asclepias syriaca. The wings of the Viceroy butterfly are striped orange and black, with a black line across the hindwing, and a single row of white dots in the black marginal band. Alternate scientific name, Basilarchia archippus. The Viceroy butterfly looks similar to a Monarch.
This little guy stayed perched on the milkweed plant for a very long time while I took photographs. I had come from an architectural photo shoot so, although I had two cameras along, all I had with me were a wide angle lens (20mm) on my main camera and a regular lens (35/50mm equivalent) on my backup camera, which required me to get very close. He did not seem at all bothered by my presence.
I got some much closer shots which you can see in my Nature and Animals and Insects Colletions, but this is my favorite. I love the romantic feel. It was a very hot day and I think you can feel that as well as the quiet and sense of calm.
I had been driving along a back road when I saw this lovely pond and just had to stop despite the heat. It was worth the stop. Nature is such a gift.
