Description
Profile of a Great spangled fritillary butterfly, Speyeria cybele, pollinating a native wildflower, a purple coneflower, Echinacea purpurea,at Rockefeller State Park Preserve in Pleasantville, NY.
I spent hours taking a series of photographs of these beautiful butterflies as they pollinated the lovely pink echinacea flowers. They are endlessly fascinating and the native plant garden near the entrance to the park is a mecca for these and other butterflies that are native to New York.
The golden orange and black fritillary butterfly is also known as silverspots because in addition to the pattern of black spots and dashes on its wings, it has some silver spots on its hindwings.
