Artist's Description
Bell detail from the tall ship Star of India moored in San Diego harbor, California USA 2011. Built on the Isle of Man in 1863 as the merchantman Euterpe, this 212-foot barque, one of the earliest iron-hulled ships, started as a merchant ship sailing to India. She later sailed emigrants to New Zealand, Australia, California and Chile before coming under American ownership. Various California companies sailed her to Hawaii, then Alaska and, before eventually coming under the aegis of the Maritime Museum of San Diego, she was also used to stage a play and as a floating brothel. She was named Star of India in 1906. One of the oldest preserved US sailing ships, she continues to set sail at least yearly. It is said that two ghosts haunt the ship. The first is John Campbell, a teenage stowaway from Glasgow, Scotland who hoped to sail to Australia, but fell from one of the masts in 1884. The second was a Chinese sailor caught in the chains as the anchor was raised.
About Marianne Campolongo
I have been hooked on photography since age six when my grandmother, returning from a trip to Egypt, passed on her well-traveled Kodak Brownie camera as well as her wanderlust. My work has been shown in galleries throughout the New York metropolitan area, including at the Museum of the City of New York and hang in the collections of private, institutional and corporate collectors. They have been published in Smithsonian and Coastal Living magazines, in The Guardian newspaper, in books published by National Geographic, Fodors, DK and Workman Publishing and in dozens of other...
