Artist's Description

Close up view of petroglyphs in Petroglyph Canyon, Valley of Fire state park, Nevada.

The ancient prehistoric petroglyphs are still sharp since they were carved through the desert varnish on the surface of the stones so the red rock of the Aztec sandstone below shines through. It is believed the earliest were carved by the Basketmaker people over 2,500 years ago, followed by the Anasazi, the ancient Pueblo culture, and the Paiute, various Native American cultures who passed through the valley over millennia.
