First lit in 1764 to help light the way to New York Harbor, Sandy Hook Lighthouse in Highlands, New Jersey is the oldest lighthouse still standing in the US. It was built of rubble by the Colony of New York. It was originally on 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook, but due to expansion of the Hook it is now 1 1/2 miles from the point.
In 1766 its glass was shattered by a lightning strike and it was hit subsequently despite a lightning rod, but it still stands today. In fact, during the American Revolutionary War, before the British landed, the lamps were removed so as not to aid them in navigation. The British took control anyway and managed to add lamps, so the Colonists attacked with cannons but only managed to damage it before being driven off.
Despite this all this, the structure still stands.
