Description
The Twin Towers seen from the Brooklyn Bridge, New York, 1980s.
Scan from an original transparency taken in March 1983 coverted to a black and white digital image.
I took this photograph the first time I ever walked across the the Brooklyn Bridge. I was a law student living on the upper west side of Manhattan and attending Fordham University School of Law at the time and I still remember that beautiful spring day. An artist friend pulled me away from my books and the two of us headed downtown on the subway and then began our walk. We ran into two or three different groups of our friends as we headed toward Brooklyn and I recall being amazed at what a small world it was despite living in one of the world’s largest cities. The weather was so beautiful that it was dark by the time we headed back from Brooklyn to Manhattan. Although they are gone, the memory of these buildings will always stand as a testament to the strength and resilience of New York City.
I had no idea that this photograph would someday be so historic, that these monumental buildings would be gone in my lifetime. I can still remember going downtown with my father when I was a kid one day in the late 1960s after watching him, also a lawyer, argue a case in court, and seeing the imcredibly huge 16-acre construction site and over the years through the early 1970s seeing it go up, then visiting both the outdoor observation deck and later attending meetings at the towers in the 1980s, most notably on one of the very top floors, being amazed that it was like looking out the window of an airplane. Years later, in September 2001, I was looking forward to a meeting scheduled at Cantor Fitzgerald as a consultant to an out of town client., and watched in horror (on tv) as the towers fell, days before I was to be there. This photograph is dedicated to all those who lost their lives that day, and to those who survived.
