Description
The Lighthouse on Roosevelt Island, New York, NY. An urban lighthouse, designed by engineer and self-trained architect James Renwick, Jr., the Gothic style octagonal stone lighthouse was completed in 1873. It was built with gray gneiss quarried on the island mostly by convict labor from the penitentiary there. Renwick, the supervising engineer for the Distributing Reservoir in NYC for the Croton water supply system, also designed such notable buildings as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C, Main Building at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and both Grace Church and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan.
