Description
The long shadow cast on a cold winter’s day caught my eye as I visited Gettysburg National Military Park, a monument to the lives lost in the Civil War. It was New Year’s Day. 2020. In retrospect, it seems like a prescient place to have begun this tumultuous year.
The monument that bisects the image, near the point where the tree’s roots and its shadow meet, honors the 111th New York Infantry who fought the good fight.
It is a haunting place and the shadow seems to haunt that New York soldier, despite his victory. He won the battle, and the war. Yet a century and a half later, President Lincoln’s words, in the Gettysburg Address, call out to yet another generation, beseeching us to take up his “unfinished work” and defeat injustice. We will overcome.
Today, November 19, 2020, as I upload this, marks the 155th Anniversary of the Gettysburg Address.

As Lincoln said, "It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
Those words are ones we Americans should all take to heart. Let us make America the nation it has always striven to be.
