Description
First lit in 1764 to help light the way to New York Harbor, Sandy Hook Lighthouse in Highlands, New Jersey is the oldest lighthouse still standing in the US. It was built of rubble by the Colony of New York. It was originally on 500 feet from the tip of Sandy Hook, but due to expansion of the Hook it is now 1 1/2 miles from the point.
In 1766 its glass was shattered by a lightning strike and it was hit subsequently despite a lightning rod, but it still stands today. In fact, during the American Revolutionary War, before the British landed, the lamps were removed so as not to aid them in navigation. The British took control anyway and managed to add lamps, so the Colonists attacked with cannons but only managed to damage it before being driven off.
Despite this all this, the structure still stands.
After the war, it again was in contention. This time, the dispute was between the State of New York, which owned the tower, and the State of New Jersey. The dispute was resolved when the Federal Government took ownership in 1787. In 1996, the United States Coast Guard transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the National Park Service.
At 250 years old, it is the oldest original lighthouse in America still standing. It is still an active aid to navigation for ships in New York Harbor.
