Description
Close up view of a petroglyph in Petroglyph Canyon, Valley of Fire state park, Nevada. It is possibly a symbolic representation of rain.
The ancient prehistoric petroglyphs in the Valley of Fire are still sharp millennia later since a they were carved through the desert varnish on the surface of the stones so the red rock of the Aztec sandstone below still shines through. It is believed the earliest were carved by the Basket maker people over 2,500 years ago, followed by the Anasazi, the ancient Pueblo culture, and the Paiute, various Native American cultures who passed through the valley since prehistoric times.
