Description
Östra Älgögrundet fyr ( lighthouse ) along the coast of Sweden amid the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago seen from the high deck of a cruise ship on Baltic Sea at sunrise. The lighthouse station was established in 1931. The 25 foot tall lighthouse looks deceptively small when seen from above. Beautiful ripples of blue and golden yellow and orange from the rising sun and reflections of the lighthouse in the ocean water.
I rose at 4:30 AM to take this series of photographs of the Stockholm archipelago and at first the white night in August was so bright I thought I had missed the sunrise and that it would be a gray and foggy day. Soon, however, a soft golden orange crept into the sky and reflected in the water of the Baltic Sea. Throughout the morning the gentle golden hour colors you see here would intensify and change dramatically to bright orange and then pink and purple. It was an amazing show of color - a sunset unlike any I have ever seen. Simply beautiful.
I am a big fan of lighthouses and to my delight, I saw many on my journey that morning. It took a long time for me to identify them all but thanks to finding maps online and tracing the cruise ship's route using certain landmarks and following the timeline of my photographs, I was able to identify them all.
A gull perches on top. You can get a sense of the size of the lighthouse from how tiny the bird is. Compare it to the gull on the 29 foot Goat Island Lighthouse in my Lighthouse collection here:

and you will realize just how large this seemingly tiny lighthouse really is!
In addition to how beautiful this will look framed on your wall, it is also available on all sorts of home decor items from throw pillows (or cushions as my British friends say) to shower curtains, and even as wonderful round beach towels and cool yoga mats. I'm have such a hard time myself deciding between buying this design as a yoga mat myself or a few of my other faves. I already have it hanging on the wall in my office.
