Description
I have named this image Dream of Peace due to the symbolism surrounding both red and white poppies. This is a photograph of a red poppy, which only appears to be white. This is significant because it is a Flanders Poppy, also know as a Corn Poppy or Shirley Poppy, Scientific name Papaver rhoeas.
Red poppies are a symbol in both the US and the UK in honor of those who fell in the line of duty since World War I, often sported on Armistice Day aka Veterans Day (US) and Remembrance Day (UK), November 11th, for the armistice that ended World War I on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The poppy symbol comes from the John McCrae poem, In Flanders Fields. Accordingly many people wear a red paper poppy on Veterans Day (Remembrance Day) to honor them.
Recently, some people have chosen to wear a white poppy instead, as a symbol of peace, which some perceive as a controversial choice in their anti-war stance. I used a red filter in making this photograph, which heightened the contrast and made the red flower appear white. It was a conscious choice, as I wanted the image to symbolize both the quest for peace (white poppy), while also honoring our war heroes (red poppy). Countless veterans have given so much and their sacrifices should not be forgotten, yet I hope one day no young man or woman will need to go to war, but I am a realist. And so, I dream of peace.
Thus, while this image is a beautiful reminder of spring appropriate for any decor, it is also a special tribute to veterans. In honor of our veterans, each November, I will donate a portion of all profits from sales of prints of this image made throughout the year, to the Wounded Warriors Project.
