Description
Rental row boats dinghies lined up in a row along the shore at Canopus Lake at Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Carmel New York, USA, on Labor Day weekend. The beautiful freshwater lake provides swimming and boating all summer long.
This freshwater lake is less than 40 minutes from my house. Nice sandy beach and sandy bottom. I don't know why I waited until I'd lived here nearly 18 years and it was the last weekend of summer to research lakes for swimming in New York State but being a coastal beach girl I guess it never occurred to me to find a lake to swim in. I cannot wait to go back next summer and plan to do some hiking there this fall and maybe cross-country skiing there this winter.
New York is such a beautiful state. There are so many hiking trails close to where I live even though I'm only an hour north of Manhattan. If I drive upstate on the Taconic Parkway it becomes so rural and lovely so quickly. I have passed Fahnestock State Park many times on those rides and I'm glad that I finally checked it out.
